Aquatic gardens are also called water gardens and backyard ponds. They can also be referred to as garden ponds. Aquatic gardens usually combine aquatic plants and ornamental fish in a man-made environment.

Aquatic gardens can feature fixed items like rocks, statues, fountains, water courses, and waterfalls to add to the decor and integrate the garden with the landscape and surrounding environment.

Most people build or purchase aquatic gardens to house Koi. However, goldfish are also popular. Both of these fish are colorful and do not require an extra heat source if the pond is located in a temperate environment. Other common pond fish include catfish, bass, carp, and bluegill. If you keep fish in your pond, you will need to purchase filters at a pond supplies store so that the pond will have enough oxygen to keep the fish alive.

It is also common to keep plants in an aquatic garden. Common water garden plants are classified into three categories: submerged, marginal, and floating.

• Submerged plants live underwater although you can see their leaves or flowers on the surface. These plants are often put one to two feet below the surface of the water. They are helpful to have because they create oxygen for the fish in your pond. Some popular submerged plants are the water lily and the hornwort.

• Marginal plants have roots under water while the rest of the plant sits above the surface. Popular marginal plants include the iris, the cattail, elephant ear, and the lotus.

• The floating plant floats freely on the surface and is not anchored to the soil in any way. They are often used to provide shade which prevents the growth of algae. Some common floating plants are mosquito ferns, water lettuce, and water-clover.

Other plant forms such as algae are found in both fresh and saltwater ponds. Usually algae resides at the side of the pond, however, some species of algae can grow up to a foot a day and can cause significant problems in aquatic gardens.
People that have plants in their ponds usually purchase aquatic snails. Common snails include the Apple snail and the Melantho snail.

Animals that visit ponds include frogs, turtles, and snakes. Aquatic gardens can also attract predators such as raccoons, domestic cats, and birds such as heron. These predators can be dangerous to fish and owners of Koi are wary of these animals because Koi can be very expensive.

People can also be predators of Koi. Recently, hundreds of pounds of Koi were reported stolen in England from an aquatic pond. The fish were valued at more than $5,000. The owner reported that he had no idea how the fish were stolen, but the authorities were called and notices were posted in newspapers telling buyers they should report any suspicious Koi sellers to the police.

While you might want to keep your guard up, such stories are rare and if you place your focus on maintenance of your pond supplies and your aquatic gardens you should be able to enjoy your flora and fauna for years to come.
