Aquatic Gardens FAQs

The biological filter in my koi pond consistently is clogged with debris. Is there another kind of filter I could use to fix this?

Although biological filters are great for helping reduce the amount of toxins and pollutants in the water, they are poorly equipped to be able to handle larger items that may get stuck in the system. Cleaning out leaves and twigs from the filter is not something that biological filters are very good at. A mechanical filter, however, is much more effective at ensuring that the water is able to flow freely through the filter without being constrained by twigs or sticks. Mechanical pre-filters are able to keep the water moving freely and, in turn, improve the overall productivity of the pond.

When creating a reef aquarium, in what order should the live rock, fish and coral be added?

After the aquarium has been successfully equipped with the filtration system and other important equipment, the next step that the owner needs to take is to add the live rock. This rock will prove to be the foundation for the rest of the reef equipment. After the live rock has been put in place, the next step is to add the coral. However, this should not be done until the live rock is completely cured. This can take four to six weeks. After the parameters of the fish tank have stabilized, it is fine to start adding fish. The specifications of the tank should continue to be closely monitored to ensure the safety of the fish.

What should I do with my koi in the winter?

Koi fish are actually native to China, where the winters are long and harsh. This means that koi are specially equipped to combat the winters they face. Despite this, there are certain things that can be done to improve the likelihood that the koi will survive the winter. While some people will bring their koi indoors during the winter months, there are many others who leave the koi outside. Although the koi are often able to survive by doing something similar to hibernating, the likelihood of them living until spring is increased if there are items like floating heaters being utilized in the pond.
