Fish ponds

Many people create their fish ponds in the warmer months and sometimes do not think about what to do with the fish in the winter until the air starts to turn cold. Fortunately, there are some things that can be done to help protect fish during the winter months.

Many pond owners will purchase de-icers or heaters for their fish ponds. These are floating heating elements that help keep the surface of the pod from freezing.

Not only does this help to keep the inhabitants of the fish ponds warm, but it also allows for the escape of toxic gases from the pond as items decompose during the winter months. The heaters also provide an opening for oxygen to enter the ponds.

Some people prefer to fatten up or move inside the inhabitants of their fish ponds during the winter months. The smaller the fish in a pond, the easier it is to move them into an indoor aquarium. Those who have fish that cannot easily be moved indoors will sometimes try to “fatten” the fish up by feeding them a little more in the winter months. This extra layer of fat helps increase the body temperature of fish in cold fish ponds.
