Koi ponds

Sometimes when people see koi ponds and think that they would like to have one, they do not realize the amount of work and research that must go into creating one of these ponds.

A question that has been known to present itself to some new owners of koi ponds is “How big should the pond be?”

The minimum size of koi ponds should be around 900 gallons. While younger koi may be able to thrive in a pond smaller than this, the fish grow rapidly and will quickly run out of room. The best size for koi ponds that have been installed near homes or small businesses is between 2,000 and 5,000 gallons of water.

Of course, the size of the pond will also depend on the number of fish that live in the pond. The general rule for koi ponds is that there should be between 50-100 gallons of water per koi less than 12 inches long. Some koi can grow to be more than 24 inches long. These koi should each have at least 500-1,000 gallons of water in the pond to call their own.

If these specifications concerning koi ponds are understood before the pond is built and stocked, the owner of the pond will have an easier time maintaining the pond.
