Water gardens
It is important that water gardens be cared for throughout
the year. This is especially true during the winter months, regardless
of what the climate is like.
Those who live in climates where it stays warmer year-round will do
things a bit differently from those who experience larger changes in
temperature from season to season.
People who live in places with warm climates – like Southern
California, Florida and Arizona – are best off if they will keep
the water in their water gardens running throughout the year. If and
when the water drops below 50 degrees, most of the fish in water gardens
will “hibernate” for the winter.
Those who live in places that experience freezing temperatures in the
winter should either leave the waterfall in their water gardens running
or use a heater or de-icer to keep the water from freezing over. The
health of the fish in water gardens relies on the exchange of gas and
oxygen in and out of the pond. It is important that there is at least
one decent-sized hole in the ice maintained throughout the winter months.
Although some owners of water gardens insist that people must bring
their fish into indoor aquariums in the winter, if the proper precautions
are taken, there really is no need to do so.
